so the nintendo 3ds is where the playcoins come from, both the name and assumingly mechanics.according to this wiki it's roughly 100 steps for a single playcoin, and assuming gordon's getting the playcoins from the gps trackers in the suit it'd be totally possible to calculate his rough playcoin count by the end of the series. using rough estimates for his height and stride length, 100 steps is approximately 250-ish ft. the half life 1 maps measure area in hammer units, with 1 unit being roughly 1/16th of a foot, meaning 4000 hammer units traveled linearly is equal to one playcoin. ive had this floating around in my head for ages but the sheer amount of time it'd take to measure all of half life 1 is what's been in my way. however, there is another (albiet stupider) way. in act 3 part 2 coomer says that the exchange rate from USD to playcoins is 5 to 1. assuming that the playcoins are being converted from gordon's bank account actively as he uses them (ignoring the one time coomer says he has 2 playcoins remaining), you could find the amount he theoretically has by just figuring out how much money he's got. the median yearly salary for a theoretical physicist (info from some random website, this could be totally false) is around $75,000; adjusting that to 2003 dollars becomes ~$45,000. divide that by 5 and rounding down that means gordon has, by an incredibly rough estimate, 9000 playcoins at any given time.
i suppose another way would be to track how many times playcoins are mentioned/used throughout all the acts then just plot the amount spent as he goes along, adjusting for whenever coomer says he's all out of playcoins or however much a single action costs.
none of these really mean anything nor is it a call to action, i just thought it'd be fun to think about (what im saying here is don't waste your time trying to measure and tally up gordon's route through black mesa)

at night when everyon is sleeping he is secretly shaking his 3ds up and down for extra playcoins (totally not something i did as a kid)

so i think what youre saying is someone needs to waste their time meticulously watching all of the HLVRAI vods from start to finish and tally up every mention, addition, or deduction of the "Gordons Playcoins" because this information is just so dire and definitely worth the time.
we should also consider counting every time gordon takes a step and every time he takes a step the video gets 10% faster. i think im getting off track though. good math but it hurts my brain

the idea of trying to figure out what counts as a step hurts my soul tbh. maybe others are built different tho idk do we have any sentient fitbits here

the idea of trying to figure out what counts as a step hurts my soul tbh. maybe others are built different tho idk do we have any sentient fitbits here if it's counting steps through the suit there's probably a more sophisticated step counter in there but also i think it would be really funny if it was just a 3ds step counter taken wholesale out of a 3ds and installed straight into the suit with no modifications. bc that 3ds step counter was not at all sophisticated. i used to regularly cheat playcoins out of that baby just by violently shaking my 3ds
