back in my olden days i used iMovie (all i had was a mac mini) and because i was SO autistic about ensuring my timeline looked as similarly to iMovie as possible, I swapped over to Filmora once i got a proper pc. its not great nor free, but has served me decently!

i used hitfilm express for many years of making amvs and tiktok compilations and stuff, it's free and... probably not the best option out there? but it worked for me. it can have issues with audio playback which has made me really frustrated with it recently bc i do a lot of stuff w/ audio syncing but i feel like that might be less annoying when you're working with clips w/ their original audio and/or dont necessarily need to make shit fall exactly on the beat.
atm i'm using premiere because i have access to adobe suite via uni. dont recommend like, subscribing to adobe but if ppl are at school/uni i know there are sometimes ways you can either get a discount or get free access to stuff like that even if it's not suuuper in line with what you're doing? i got windows for free thru my uni for the pc i built so that was pretty cool. had no idea it was a possibility until my friend who helped w the build clued me in.
also if you're going the adobe route you'll want premiere for this type of thing not after effects. i actually like after effects a decent amount its just. i mean. for effects. also doesn't work super similarly to other video editing software in ways that get really annoying when doing things with clips/shots, my latest animation used both after effects for the tweening And hitfilm for putting all the individual shots + audio together. i've made the mistake of conflating the two before, i pirated after effects like idk a year or two before i actually learned it assuming i could save space by not getting both and was Immediately confused.
but like fuck adobe.

i personally use either Davinci Resolve or Shotcut depending on how big the project is. Resolve is good with text and pretty decent with keyframes, though it takes up a fuck ton of ram and processing power in my experience. Shotcut is pretty lightweight and has a ton of really stupid-looking (in a funny way) built in video filters, but can't really do anything complicated. Though i've seen Shotcut can handle editing in weird resolutions waaaay better; Resolve can barely handle square res, and I've exported stuff out of shotcut that's like, 20 x 300 and it just works fine.
