my recommendation is you can go a real long way with diy. goth and emo fashion started w diy and alt clothing stores generally take that same sort of aesthetic and make it super overpriced some diy tips: - you can get cheap black tshirts at sewing and fabric shops like JoAnn's or Michaels, or whatever is near you. while ur there u can grab a thing of cheap white fabric paint too, and bam, youve got the ingredients for makin ur own tshirts. grab some black fabric while youre there and you can also make band patches which u can sew onto pants, jackets, etc
- take scissors to ur clothes. with tshirts u can cut a new neckline, cut off the sleeves, cut it into a tank top, cut holes into it, the skys the limit. similarly u can cut holes into pants and other items of clothing
- if you have an old pair of tights, (especially fishnets, but any will do) cut off the toes and then cut out the crotch area to make a head hole (be careful when doing this, tights are stretchy so it will end up beijg a larger head hole than u think it will be) and bam, youve got some new sleeves u can wear under a shirt/tank/crop etc. optionally use your scissors to cut holes along the length of the tights for a distressed look. if its not too hot, you can layer multiple of these distressed sleeves on top of each other for an interesting look
- likewise u can also just distress a pair of tights without turning them into sleeves. and potentially layer it with other distressed tights
- i touched on this in the first one a bit but cover ur clothes in patches. patch pants and patch jackets are a staple, and while they do take a lot of effort, theyre always unique and fun. grab some bulk studs and spikes from studsandspikes.com for cheap and u can also deck it out with shiny things. stick safety pins on it if u want. u can also make buttons out of old bottle caps, paint, hot glue, and safety pins and stick those on there
- clothing dye is your best friend. get a bottle of black rit dye as well as some rit dyemore for synthetic fabrics and u can transform almost anything. find something cheap in a thrift store that you like the style of (regardless of color) and stick it in a dye bath once or twice
- for the emos out there, kandi is really fun and easy to make. pony beads and string are really cheap and u can get them from p much any craft store. however i like to source mine from beadtin, they sell specific colors in bulk
theres definitely plenty more diy tips but this is what i can think of off the top of my head right now.
there are of course some types of goth amd emo fashion that are difficult or not feasible for the average person to diy (especially if ur more into victorian goth style) and of course not everyone has the fine motor skill or general physical ability to be able to do everything on this list, but i always recommend ppl look into how they might diy it first before going to any alt shops bc the alt shops always add a huge markup to things u could make in an hour at home with $10 of supplies
all of this advice is gender neutral btw. traditional goths and emos tended to dress the same regardless of gender

i second the kandi bit, i love making it so much !! but aside from that im not too good at putting together goth/emo outfits myself, what i know comes mostly from observation. a lot of it is about accessories and embellishment, so the patches + pins + tights advice above is very useful. find jewelry you like and layer it. i feel like make up is also kind of important which is probably why i usually look like a poser lol you asked for links so ill point you to the following sites from my bookmarks: www.rebelsmarket.com/ (many vendors, not completely goth/emo but its easy to find the good stuff)

I'm a huge believer in DIY! I get pretty much all my clothes from the thrift and customize them with patches and paint if i feel like it. My fav thing to do is make patches, which is super easy to do with scrap fabric and fabric paint! Here's a great tutorial on making them with stencils! Just pick any goth/punk/alternative band you like and go to town!

if ur in the states, I like keicollective! they tend to lean more on the brighter side of alt clothing, but its all indie artists! I also like foxblood (another state side)
also yes diy! I saw someone make a printscreen and use the underside of their bed as a "dark room" and I want to try that out sooo bad
