Hello superstars. I'm wondering this since it took me a while to get into hlvrai (I started watching wayne post-hlvrai boom and only watched the amoug us live) and when I did watch it I knew who everyone was. So for me it was mainly laughing along with this group of friends doing improv basically. But I didnt learn this until seeing stuff on tumblr that people were CRAZY about hlvrai and its "lore" (sorry its just improv) and had crazy drama. atleast thats what I gathered from reading some stuff. So.. What was the fandom like when the videos and streams were first coming out? Share any stories you have or just memories!

i’m breaking character a little here but while i watched hlvrai around 2020, after the edited vids, i didn’t participate in the fandom a lot . i’ve been in tumblr fandom for a while and long enough to keep my distance bc people are insane and from what i’ve heard this was no different . my theory is that it’s bc a lot of the fans were young and had a really strong attachment to hlvrai and emotional regulation as a teenager is hard enough but then u add fandom to the equation and it’s a big mess .
i figure in time (if not pretty soon), there’ll be a sort of revival of the fandom in which the younger fans are a lot older and (hopefully) a lot more chill

There were roleplay blogs on every corner, and huge waves of fandom-themed things used to overtake the tag for a week or so, such as Y2KVR and the multiple Gordons. There were bits of drama (someone claiming hlvrai was racist bc of Darnold, the Tomby bite, Benry/Forzen fans were bootlickers bc they were military/cops), it was just dumb kid shit that really caused problems. Lots of young fans and stuff.

i was not there but i heard from a friend that some ppl in the fandom had trouble separating the rtvs members from their hlvrai characters for a while to the point where hardcore benry/gordon shippers got upset when wayne mentioned having a girlfriend bc they wanted him to be dating scorpy or something insane like that. i dont know if that is tru but i have other fandoms act similarly so it would not surprise me. and in general the stories i hear abt hlvrai fandom around that time are scarey

I was on ground zero when it dropped and the tumblr fandom started and I second the previous two posts. most people had never heard of these streamers before so took the characters as their first impression of them. beyond that, benrey quickly got the tumblr sexyman treatment and the usual bickering cropped up from that.

i use my sideblog drafts to archive old fanart, so i can agree with others that there was a lot more shipping. lots of blue benrys, lots of bubbies with sharp teeth, lots more tommy art then there is now. a ton of accusations that it was bigoted in some way. also more...angst? idk how to describe that part. i guess the same as other folks were saying: fandom-brained people reading into the improv in weird ways

Wow, this thread is providing a lot of interesting information about the fandom during that time, thank you all for sharing!
It sure does seem like fandoms have similar cycles in their lifetimes. While HLVRAI sure is funny, sometimes I worry that younger people get too invested... but I suppose that is all a part of growing up!
Regardless of parts of the fandom, I am glad that RTVS put all that effort into making HLVRAI! It is a very funny series.

i was kind of present for the early fandom? i watched the stream edits as they came out after maybe the first or second episode, watched them with my partner at the time. said partner invited me to a hlvrai discord server started by their friends soon after hlvrai ended? i'd like to say? i was modded because i was generally trusted it was small at the time etc.... and then the server became very. very big. i was never super invested in the fandom side of things, it was just.... never something that felt incredibly interesting to interact with in that way. idk. like you said, theres not really much lore. and once this server got to a certain size i pretty much checked out aside from occasionally doing some mod things. there was a big problem in there where people would just preemptively spoil any text that they thought may be sensitive (even if no one had asked for it to be spoiled) without actually saying what was being discussed. i think i left after i made an announcement trying to reign that in and it just... did not do shit.
aside from hyperspecific stories like that i honestly don't remember much. hope this was interesting regardless

I got into hlvrai during the boom, honestly I couldn't stand a lot of the people in the fandom, I think most ppl were younger than I was. Still, I made a ton of friends because of HLVRAI, I would've never met my best internet friends if we hadn't joined the discorp after we watched it. Most of my testimony of earlier rtvs stuff would be old-school (if you can say that about shit that happened a grand total of 3.5 years ago) discorp hijinks lol

I was part of scorpy's discord/twitch community in 2020 and he kept having to set boundries around benry cause people would call him benry and act like he was benry. It was really weird
